Common Questions

How Does Hypnosis Work?

Your mind works on two levels – the conscious and the subconscious level. Your conscious mind is the analytical part of your mind. You make decisions, think, solve problems, and then act with your conscious mind. It is also home to your willpower. This part of your mind requires a lot of energy.

Your subconscious mind is home to your automatic habits, patterns and beliefs. It’s basically your autopilot or default pattern. It is also home to your emotions, imagination and beliefs. In hypnosis we ‘quiet’ the conscious analytical mind and communicate directly with the subconscious mind, resulting in quick, easy and lasting change to your unwanted beliefs, behaviors and habits.

> Have I Experienced Hypnosis Before?

Yes! Hypnosis is a natural state that people are constantly slipping in and out of every day. You have been hypnotized thousands of times in your life, you just never called it hypnosis before. For instance, each and every night right before you fall asleep, when you are not quite sleeping, but you are not awake either, you are in a state of light hypnosis. You also experience hypnosis whenever you become absorbed in doing anything like driving, working, reading or watching TV. Athletes typically experience hypnosis whenever they are ‘in the zone’ – completely absorbed in their sport and unaware of the spectators in the stands.

> What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?

Everyone experiences hypnosis uniquely. Some people feel a relaxed heaviness or a pleasant calm, while others may feel very light and free. One thing that everyone experiences, however, is extreme relaxation – completely free from physical tension and emotional stress.

> Is Hypnosis A Sleep State? Will I Be Unconscious?

No, hypnosis is not a sleep state. In hypnosis you are conscious, alert, and aware of your environment. You remain in control at all times and can hear all the sounds around you, but you will focus on the suggestions given by the hypnotist.

> I Am Strong-Willed. Can I Be Hypnotized?

During a hypnosis session, most people remain completely aware of everything that is going on and remember most, if not everything.

> I Am Strong-Willed - Can I Be Hypnotized?

Yes. Strong-willed individuals, or those who like to feel in control, can use hypnosis confidently. Every normal, intelligent person with the right attitude and motivation has the capacity to experience hypnosis. A skilled hypnotist will be able to find the right approach to assist you into a hypnotic state.

> Will I Reveal All My Secrets?

Hypnosis is not a truth serum. No one can be made to reveal their secrets when they are hypnotized. You are aware and in control at all times while hypnotized and would never do or say anything you normally wouldn’t

> Will the Hypnotist Have Control Over Me?

No. A hypnotist cannot make you do something you don’t want to do. Hypnosis is a consent state. Although a hypnotist can guide you into the hypnotic state, the ability to accept hypnosis and the suggestions presented rests within you. You are always

> Can I Get Stuck In Hypnosis?

You cannot get stuck in hypnosis. It is a natural state. If something were to happen to the hypnotist while you were hypnotized, you would either get bored and come back to your normal awareness, or simply fall asleep and then wake up. You can discontinue the hypnotic state at any time. Since you are in control of your hypnotic experience, there is no difficulty in bringing yourself out of hypnosis.

> How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Every client is different, and hypnotherapy sessions are not “one size fits all.” Clients may get results in as little as one or two sessions, but commonly more sessions are needed over a longer period, especially if the unwanted behavior has been habitual for many years. You will receive an estimate during your consultation of how many sessions may be needed.

> What Will Happen At My First Session?

During your first visit you will learn what hypnosis is, how it works, the ways you may experience it and any questions you may have will be answered. We will then discuss the goals you want to achieve or the problem you want to resolve. Once you are ready, you will be guided into a hypnotic state using methods best suited to your individual needs. While hypnotized, you will be given hypnotic suggestions that are tailored and specific to you and the reason you came into the office. At the end of the session you will emerge from hypnosis feeling refreshed and relaxed.

> Will My Health Insurance Cover Hypnosis?

Some insurance companies will cover hypnosis services. We, however, do not process insurance claims. Some HSA accounts will reimburse you for hypnosis services and we can provide you the necessary paperwork upon request. Check with your HR department to see if your HSA account will reimburse you for such services.

> Do You Accept Credit Cards?

Yes. Catalyst Hypnosis Center accepts all major credit cards.

> What Are Your Fees and How Long Are the Sessions?

> What Is the Difference Between a Private Session and a Semi-Private Session?

The major difference between a private session and a semi-private session is that a semi-private session is more generalized than a private session. Semi-private sessions are 2-3 people working on a similar issue (weight loss, stress management, etc). In a private session, the session is more personalized and based on the client’s specific needs and desires; whereas in a semi-private session, the suggestions are more general so that they can apply to more people. The other major difference is the cost of the session. Semi-private costs can be found on the pricing page.

> Do You Offer Packages?

Yes. Package prices are available. More information can be found on the pricing page.

> Will My Results Be Permanent?

Hypnotic suggestions can stay with some people forever, while others need to have the suggestions reinforced. The results of hypnosis are cumulative in nature; the more the hypnotic suggestions and techniques are practiced, the more lasting and permanent the results will be. Suggestions can be reinforced with additional hypnosis sessions, self-hypnosis at home, and/or by listening to hypnosis CD’s.
